As a Portland-based interior design firm, we take great pride in creating exceptional spaces that elevate the culinary experience. When we start a kitchen design, we’re considering that a gourmet kitchen is more than just a place to cook; it’s a hub of creativity, flavor, and social interaction. It’s where you craft new recipes and foster relationships.
Functional Kitchen Layouts: The Heart of Culinary Creativity
A well-designed gourmet kitchen must prioritize functionality to support the chef’s culinary artistry. At Laurel Design Collective, we emphasize creating layouts that enhance workflow, making cooking a seamless and enjoyable experience.

The Work Triangle
The classic work triangle—a design principle that places the stove, refrigerator, and sink in a triangular layout—remains a cornerstone of kitchen design. But should it be? As kitchens have gotten larger and gained additional function as places to dine and socialize. The original work triangle is making less and less sense. On our kitchen spaces we focus on a couple key areas of movement.
Sink, Compost, Cutting Zone
This is a key triangle of many kitchens and how the sink interacts with your cutting prep area and the compost and trash is essential to moving efficiently around your space. We love installing an under counter compost bin directly under a floating cutting board so our clients can push the trimmings directly into the bin.
Sink, Dishwasher, Daily Dish Storage
Our designs focus heavily on this trilogy. We always try to design our kitchens so a person can stand at the sink and load and unload a dishwasher filled with every day dishes without taking more than 2 steps. This makes time spent on these chores go so quickly a child could do it, which, hmmm… maybe this is their new daily chore!
Zones for Cooking, Preparation, and Entertaining
Our triangles of work all focus on creating distinct zones for various kitchen activities. A dedicated cooking zone can feature professional-grade appliances, such as commercial-grade ranges and wall ovens. A separate preparation area, complete with ample counter space and a secondary sink, allows for seamless meal prep. For our clients with large properties or gardens, we’ve installed special canning kitchens outfitted with all the space one needs to put up what they’ve grown.
Incorporating an entertaining zone with a bar and wine fridge makes sure guests frequent the space while the cook is at work. Comfortable seating can transform the kitchen into a social hub, where family and friends gather to enjoy the culinary experience and participate together. This thoughtful zoning enhances the kitchen’s functionality while promoting interaction and enjoyment.
High-End Appliances: Elevating Culinary Experiences
The heart of any gourmet kitchen lies in its appliances. For top chefs, high-quality, state-of-the-art equipment can make all the difference in the cooking process. At Laurel Design Collective, we believe in selecting appliances that not only enhance performance, but also complement the overall design. We work closely with our appliance vendors to select appliances best for each project and each individual user. So whether you’re a dedicated gas-cooktop person or interested in exploring the newest technology in induction, we work with you. Some of our vendors even host dinners where you are able to see, interact with, and cook with their appliances before you purchase.

Professional-Grade Equipment
Investing in professional-grade appliances is essential for any gourmet kitchen. We chose beautiful, professional-grade equipment for our Laurelhurst global eclectic Craftsman project. When we’re working with a dedicated home chef we look for ranges with a minimum of 6 burners, double ovens, and convection capabilities, which allow for precise cooking and baking. Induction cooktops offer rapid heating and easy cleanup, making them a favorite among many chefs. And don’t forget the steam oven (bonus: steam ovens can be used for water-bath canning!)!
Incorporating advanced refrigeration options, such as dual-zone wine fridges or built-in refrigerators with customizable features, can also enhance functionality. These high-end appliances not only perform exceptionally well but also add a touch of sophistication to your culinary space. Some of our chefs love the elegant industrial nature of stainless steel appliances, while others prefer integrated appliances with cabinet fronts so the equipment is second to the aesthetic design.
Integrated Technology
Modern kitchens are increasingly incorporating smart technology to streamline cooking and enhance convenience. Smart ovens, programmable cooktops, and voice-activated assistants can make cooking more intuitive and efficient. Touchless faucets and sensor-activated lighting add an extra layer of modern convenience. Refrigerators that send you a picture of their contents so you know if you need to buy more ketchup or if there’s a half-empty bottle in the door.
At Laurel Design Collective, we advocate for the integration of technology that aligns with the chef’s lifestyle and preferences. By incorporating these advancements, you can create a kitchen that feels contemporary and cutting-edge while still being user-friendly. And if technology’s not for you, we can keep things old school.
Aesthetic Elements: Creating an Inspiring Culinary Environment
While functionality is key, the aesthetic aspects of a gourmet kitchen are equally important. At Laurel Design Collective, we believe that a beautifully designed kitchen can inspire creativity and elevate the cooking experience. There does not have to be a compromise between beauty and function.

Elegant Materials and Finishes
Choosing high-quality materials and finishes can significantly enhance the visual appeal of your gourmet kitchen. Consider luxurious surfaces such as soapstone or marble countertops that can withstand the rigors of daily cooking while adding a touch of elegance. If patina isn’t your jam, granite and quartz as well as porcelain countertops make maintenance a breeze. Custom cabinetry in rich woods or sleek, modern finishes creates a stunning backdrop to the work at hand.
Backsplashes are another opportunity to showcase your personal style. While we love the ease of cleaning that comes from a slab backsplash, we also admire the wealth of tiles available to bring more pattern and texture to a kitchen.
Thoughtful Lighting Design
Lighting plays a crucial role in creating the perfect ambiance in a gourmet kitchen. Layered lighting, including task, ambient, and accent lighting, ensures that the space is both functional and inviting. Pendant lights over islands or countertops can serve as both practical lighting and stylish decor. Undercounter lighting is a given. Added accent lighting helps create ambiance and encourages company for the chef.
Natural light should also be maximized wherever possible. Large windows or skylights can be incorporated into the design to flood the kitchen with daylight, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Consider incorporating window treatments that allow for flexibility in controlling light while maintaining privacy. We usually opt for roman shades.
